About Our Classes

We are excited at our new offereing of classes at StitchWitch. our sewing modules will always be on the calender teaching all the wonderful techniques, tips and hacks in a logical and enjoyable way.

Our Ready, Steady, Sew module is always fully booked with new sewists learning the basic skill set. I love the way the course is set out and the content it covers. A real value for money product from StitchWitch.

Module One teaches sewing on knits. Our new patterns are modern and flattering and are graded to a size 30. The method of instruction is on a demonstration basis and the content adds to the Ready, Steady, Sew skill set. Working on knit fabric is so rewarding, quick and easy. The garments are professional looking and you can feel confeident wearing items of clothing you have made yourself.

Module Two is in the pipeline, new patterns have been tested and are currently being transfred into digital format ready for printing. My goal is to be finished with a new manual after Easter. If sewing clothes is not your thing you can join Wilna from Moena Tombi for quilting classes the firtas Thursday of the month or you can learn to crochet with Annette who will be offering beginners classes, Amagurami and Fusion classes on certain Tuesdays of the month- see the calender below.
Hand embroidery classes with Leonie is presented every second Tuesday.

Ready Steady Sew

StitchWitch Ready Steady Sew is where your sewing skill set begins. In this course we introduce good sewing habits, sewing organization and learning about haberdashery and fabrics. You will learn to sew straight, understand patterns and also learn the basics of sewing machines and machine stitches. In the classes you will make a bag and a sleepshirt. There is a lot of content in this course and it sets the path for a successful sewing journey.

Course Structure

Classes are presented once a week for four weeks on an interactive basis. Students complete all set projects in class,

Week 4

  • Reading pattern instructions
  • Sewing and completing a knit fabric sleepshirt

Course Fees

R2950.00 for tuition, includes a manual, a box containing essential sewing supplies and a pattern. You will need to bring a sewing machine and thread to class.

Module One

StitchWitch Module One is a comprehensive course that teaches you to sew with stretch knit fabrics. Over five weeks we teach many different techniques on a demonstration basis. In each lesson we demonstrate how to make a garment that best illustrates the content of the lesson. A basic sewing skill set is essential to successfully understand and complete Module One.

For first time sewists StitchWitch Ready Steady Sew is the ideal course to learn basic sewing techniques before embarking on Module One.

Course Structure

Classes are presented once a week on a demonstration basis. Additional hands on classes can be booked at an extra cost for one on one tuition and hands on sewing.

  • Setting up for sewing
  • Measuring, tracing and cutting out

  • T-shirt with trimmed neck edge and calculations for trim lengths
  • Pressing knits

Week 2

  • Skirt with pleats and add on waistband
  • Hemming options for all garments
  • Twin needling
  • Stretch binding as another option for finishing off neck edges

Week 3

  • Tracksuit top with crossover V-neck, rib trimmed sleeves and basque
  • Measuring for a perfectly fitting pair of pants
  • Fold over waistbands with two step elasticising.

Week 4

  • V-neck top with mitred V-neck
  • Neck edge trim ratios
  • Cuff options
  • Cardigan trims with boxed in edges

Week 5

  • Panties with lace insertions
  • Elasticising with lingerie elastic
  • Camisole with rouleau straps
  • Slip with mitred lace corners

Module Two

StitchWitch Module Two follows on from Module One and it broadens your sewing skill set. In this course we cover all the techniques for cutting, marking, sewing and finishing off garments made of woven fabrics. Overlocking tips and techniques are included and the garments that we demonstrate in class are more challenging and include closures pockets and facings.

The Art of the Start

If you have never quilted before and don’t know how to cut or measure fabric, choose colours, or stitch blocks together, this is the perfect starting point.

If your quilting skills are rusty and you want to get back into quilting, these classes will get you on track again.

How does it work?

Annette teaches a row-by-row quilt. These quilts are characterized by rows of blocks which repeat the same technique. The course is designed to be flexible and stress-free. You can join at any point as the class runs in a continuous loop. Complete as many rows as you like at your own pace, while building skills and confidence with every session.

What happens in class?

This engaging, hands-on course is packed with clever quilting tips and techniques. To build your skills and confidence you will learn about:

• Precision cutting using a rotary cutter
• Seam allowances and how to stitch them accurately
• Measuring in inches using quilting rulers
• Pressing blocks correctly
• Selecting and combining colours
• Quilting techniques

Cost of the classes?

Each quilting class costs R250.00 and includes:

• Three hours of tuition
• Printed notes and often a pattern

Youth Quilt Academy

The Youth Quilt Academy is a Husqvarna VIKING programme designed to teach young, inspired sewists the art of quilting. If you are between eight and eighteen, you’re welcome to join the classes!

How does it work?

Classes are presented once a month, with each session focusing on a specific quilting technique. These are hands-on classes, and Husqvarna VIKING sewing machines are available for students to use while creating their Block of the Month.

What happens in the class?

Each lesson is supported by a comprehensive set of notes written by Mari Strydom, Husqvarna VIKING Quilt Ambassador, ensuring students receive clear guidance and a strong educational foundation both in and out of the classroom.

The techniques set out in the curriculum are followed throughout the lesson and each student completes a block.
At the end of the course a small sampler quilt will be completed and will be filled with memories and skills learnt.

What does it cost?

The classes are free, but students are required to provide their own fabrics.
Students who complete their monthly homework can send Mari a photo of their work on WhatsApp and will qualify for a monthly lucky draw.

The Youth Quilt Academy encourages creativity, confidence, and skills development in a supportive and inspiring learning environment.

Golden Needle Classes

For sewing inspiration join our Golden needle classes.

At each monthly Golden Needle class our purpose is to demonstrate a new technique, introduce a product, or share a useful machine tip. Every new skill you learn adds to your sewing toolkit. Often, it is the smallest piece of knowledge that makes the biggest difference – so don’t miss out. Join us each month and stay inspired, informed and learn new skills.

How does it work?

Golden Needle dates are confirmed at the beginning of each year and are available under the Bookings Tab on the website, however, the actual projects are added monthly. Our aim is to present projects that maximise the use of your machine and that incorporate machine stitches, machine embroidery and machine accessories. Not all machines have the same capabilities, but you take home what resonates with you from each class.

As soon as the monthly classes have been prepared – sometimes only in the same week as the event – full details are added to the website.

A WhatsApp reminder is sent on the Monday before each Golden Needle class, confirming the date, time, and project details. If you would like to receive the monthly WhatsApp reminder, please send your name and number to 076 336 8060 and we will add you to the list.

What happens in class?

Golden Needle classes are presented on a demonstration basis. Simply arrive, take a seat and enjoy the experience. Notes are provided for your reference.

Each class runs for approximately two hours and is followed by tea, cake, and most importantly, the opportunity to chat to and connect with fellow sewing enthusiasts and even make new friends.

Each Golden Needle class costs R130.00, and includes:
